August marks a fresh beginning for students, families, and educators. For students with disabilities, a successful school year often starts with more than a new backpack and school supplies—it starts with structure, preparation, communication, and the right supports in place.
The beginning of the school year is an important time to make sure IEPs and 504 Plans are understood and implemented consistently. When educators and families begin the year on the same page, students are more likely to feel confident, supported, and ready to learn.

▪ Review the IEP or 504 Plan:
Take time to review accommodations, goals, services, behavior supports, and other important information before the school year gets underway.
▪ Create Consistency:
Students benefit from predictable routines. Establish clear morning, homework, organization, and bedtime routines to help make the transition back to school smoother.
▪ Build Communication Early:
Parents and teachers should establish open communication from the beginning. Share information about strengths, challenges, successful strategies, and concerns.
▪ Know the Accommodations:
Accommodations should not simply remain on paper. Make sure the adults supporting the student understand what each accommodation looks like in the classroom.
▪ Focus on Strengths:
Begin the year by identifying what the student can do. Strength-based planning helps build confidence while identifying areas where additional support may be needed.
▪ Prepare for IEP Meetings:
Parents should feel comfortable asking questions and participating in IEP decisions. Bring concerns, observations, questions, and any relevant documentation to the table.
▪ Give Students a Voice:
Whenever appropriate, include students in conversations about their learning, goals, accommodations, and what helps them succeed.
Don't wait for a problem to become a pattern before addressing it. Early communication and collaboration can prevent small concerns from becoming larger barriers to student success.
A strong school year doesn't happen by accident—it happens through preparation, collaboration, and intentional support.
